Miracle Prayer for Mary
My roommate Mary (who served with me in Mesa) had a major life miracle recenlty.
Mary graduated from BYU recently, and spent a lot of time this past fall and winter applying for grad school. She didn't get into a few of them, had been put on the waitlist for one, and hadn't heard from the last. This was all up until a couple of weeks ago.
One day she babysat our friend Lawanna's dog. Lawanna is amazing, and we met her when we taught her in the MTC. She has the best dog (Lady) and Mary watched Lady so Lawanna could do some things. Lawanna happens to be very close with the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, especially Elder Bednar. When Elder Bednar found out about Mary helping Lawanna, he told Lawanna he wanted to pay Mary for babysitting Lady or get Mary a gift. Mary refused (in her own words, "that would be like getting paid for visiting teaching. I was just being a friend"). Well, Elder David A. Bednar kept insisting and said that there must be something Mary wanted.
Finally Mary caved. She said something like, "All I really want is to get married or to get into grad school, so if he wants to do something for me, he can pray for that." Elder Bednar said he could totally do that, and that he would have the apostles pray for her in their weekly meeting to either get married or get into grad school. The day after their Thursday meeting, Mary got a letter from the school that had previously waitlisted her with an acceptance into grad school!
How cool is that? More than anything, it was a faith-building experience for all of us, and a reminder what prayers done with love and faith can do to help others.
